About Pandas

Giant pandas live only in cool, misty mountain forests in central China, where thick bamboo grows year-round. Almost everything they eat is bamboo, about 99 percent of their diet, and an adult can munch stems and leaves for up to 14 hours a day, eating 20 to 40 pounds in that time. Their black-and-white coats help them blend into snowy rocks and shady forest, while their large heads and strong jaws handle tough stalks. Even their paws help them feed: a special thumb-like wrist bone lets them grip bamboo stems securely.

Newborn pandas are tiny, about the size of a stick of butter, pink and blind, and their black patches grow in over the first few weeks. Cubs stay with their mother for around two years, playfully tumbling and climbing trees long before they feed themselves well. Red pandas are not close relatives despite the shared name; they are smaller, reddish, and live in some of the same forests. When you color the babies in this set, remember that real pandas are mostly white, with black only on the ears, eye patches, legs, and shoulders.

Coloring Tips for Pandas

  • Classic panda: fill the ears, eye patches, arms, and legs solid black; leave the face, belly, and back white.
  • Bamboo greens: use two greens for the bamboo — a yellow-green for stalks and a deeper green for leaves.
  • Soft shading: lightly shade the white fur areas with the palest gray pencil for a fluffy 3D look.
  • Pink nose option: some kids like a pink nose instead of black — it looks extra cute on the smiling pandas.
  • Thick markers or crayons fill the big black areas fastest; just watch the edges around the white fur.

FAQ

Can I use these in my classroom?
Yes — free for personal and classroom use.

What size paper should I print on?
US Letter (8.5×11) works best; A4 is fine with fit-to-page enabled. Each coloring page has its own page with Download and Print buttons.

What should I use instead of solid black for a panda’s dark patches?
Use very dark gray for the first layer instead of pressing hard with black right away, then deepen the ears, eye patches, legs, and shoulders with a second layer. Leave the white fur mostly uncolored with just a touch of pale gray underneath the belly and chin, so the panda still looks soft and round.
