Bold ring centers can take bold handling: ring them in black and gold, or in scarlet and cream, and let the petals be the bright field around them — turquoise, magenta, and tangerine all hold their own here. The tangle of swirling leaves underneath needs deep, calm greens, and the buds a single accent color repeated three or four times.
In a tangle, order matters: color the leaves first, darkest where leaves overlap and hide in shadow, then the buds, and save the six round blooms for last so their edges stay clean. If two flowers start to blur together, slip a line of pale background color between them — separation without an outline.
