Squirrels Coloring Pages

Bushy tails and acorns everywhere — these squirrel coloring pages mix sweet cartoon squirrels with more realistic, finely furred ones. Great for fall, or any kid who loves woodland animals.

About Squirrels

Squirrels are expert climbers that spend much of their lives in trees, scampering up trunks, leaping between branches, and balancing with their long, bushy tails. That tail is more than decoration: it helps with balance, works as a blanket on cold nights, and can signal feelings to other squirrels. They build leafy nests called dreys high in the branches, and their strong curved claws and flexible ankles let them climb headfirst down a tree trunk without slipping, which is handy when they are racing to find food. Most are busiest in the morning and late afternoon.

For realistic coloring, the species helps. Gray squirrels wear a salt-and-pepper gray coat with a white belly and a tail edged in pale fur. Red squirrels are smaller and rusty red-orange on top with a cream underside, while fox squirrels are the largest, with grizzled gray-brown backs and rich orange-brown bellies and feet. All three have ever-growing front teeth for cracking acorns and nuts, and stretchy cheek pouches for carrying food back to bury for winter, a habit that plants many new trees. Forgotten caches sprout into oaks and other trees each spring.

Coloring Tips for Squirrels

  • Real gray squirrel: medium gray body, lighter gray belly, with a rusty-red tint on the tail edges.
  • Red squirrel: warm reddish-brown all over with a cream belly — the classic storybook look.
  • Tail texture: use short flicking strokes in two browns to suggest fur instead of filling it flat.
  • Palette ideas: (1) Gray squirrel — gray body, white belly; (2) Fox squirrel — orange-brown with a cream belly; (3) Autumn — brown body with orange and gold leaves around it.
  • Crayons for the cartoon squirrels; colored pencils for the fine-furred realistic ones.

FAQ

Can I use these in my classroom?
Yes — free for personal and classroom use.

What size paper should I print on?
US Letter (8.5×11) works best; A4 is fine with fit-to-page enabled. Each coloring page has its own page with Download and Print buttons.

How do I color a squirrel’s bushy tail so it looks fluffy?
Use short, curved strokes that follow the tail’s curl instead of coloring in one flat block. Start with a light base color, add darker strokes along the bottom edge and between tufts, then leave a few thin pale lines on top for shine. A white gel pen highlight works well too.
