Five has three parts: a flat hat across the top, a short line down, and a big round belly. The flat top is the anchor — starting there stops the common backwards 5. Chant hat, down, and around. The five apples sit in two short rows of three and two, which gives an early taste of counting in groups rather than one by one.
Extension: five is one whole hand, so trace a hand next to the sheet and count its five fingers. Then draw five more apples up in a tree — the rows on the sheet plus a tree of five makes ten apples to count all together.
