About Alpacas
Alpacas come from the high Andes mountains of Peru, Bolivia, and Chile, where they have been raised for thousands of years for their incredibly soft fleece. They are smaller cousins of llamas, with rounder faces, shorter ears, and a thick coat that protected them from freezing mountain nights. Alpacas are gentle herd animals that hum softly to each other, spit only when truly annoyed, and spend their days grazing together in groups where they feel safest and happiest. They communicate with gentle hums, curious ear flicks, and quiet body language, and a whole herd will often turn and stare together at anything new that appears on the hillside near them.
A single alpaca can grow fleece in more than twenty natural colors, from snowy white and cream to caramel, chocolate brown, rose gray, and true black, which is why alpacas look so good in both realistic and rainbow palettes. Their wool is warmer and lighter than sheep wool and contains no lanolin, so it feels silky rather than itchy. Baby alpacas, called crias, can stand within an hour of birth and stay close beside their mothers for months. Farmers shear them once a year in spring, and the fleece grows back thick and warm long before cold weather returns to their mountain pastures each year.

Coloring Tips for Alpacas
- Classic alpaca: cream or soft white wool with a tan face — or go full storybook with pastel pink, lavender, or mint wool.
- Andean blanket: the mountain page’s woven blanket begs for bold color — turquoise, magenta, orange, and yellow in the diamond pattern.
- Winter cocoa: an icy blue background with white snowflakes, and a red or forest-green sweater so the alpaca pops off the page.
- Birthday party: rainbow balloons and pink frosting make this the brightest page in the set — save your boldest markers for it.
- Sleepy time: deep navy sky, a golden moon and stars, and the softest pale wool for a calm bedtime page.
FAQ
Can I use these in my classroom?
Yes — free for personal and classroom use.
What paper should I print on?
US Letter (8.5×11) works best; A4 is fine with fit-to-page enabled. Each coloring page has its own page with Download and Print buttons.
What is the difference between an alpaca and a llama?
Alpacas are smaller, with blunt faces, short spear-shaped ears, and very thick fluffy fleece grown for fiber. Llamas are roughly twice as big, with longer faces and banana-shaped ears, and were bred as pack animals. If the animal looks like a cuddly teddy bear, it is almost always an alpaca.
